School Breakfast Week promotes connection between nutrition and school success

National Breakfast Week with Denver Nuggets dancers

CASTLE ROCK – Recently, area schools took part in celebrating National School Breakfast Week to promote school breakfast and the importance of nutrition as a part of learning. For South Ridge Elementary School, the celebration included Denver Nuggets dancers.

"We want to make sure kids get a good, nutritious breakfast to start their day and to start their learning," said DCSD Nutrition Services Area Manager, Amy Faricy.

Last year, 60 students at South Ridge received breakfast at the school. With a new "Grab N Go" program launched by the South Ridge Nutrition Services staff, the number of students taking part in school breakfast has doubled this year. The program allows students who don't have time to sit down and eat at the school to take their breakfast to class. The program also doesn't require additional staffing.

Faricy understands the need for a week to promote school breakfast among students. "It helps kids start the conversation about nutrition at home and the special guests that join us get kids motivated and excited!"

When it comes to mental health services, communities traditionally focus on supporting kids as needs arise. This work is crucial for the safety of our students. Equally important, though, is prevention-based programming that can help, early on, prevent the social-emotional challenges our kids may be experiencing from escalating.
