Sleep Hygiene: Developing habits for healthy sleep

Boy sleeping.

We are an active, interrupted and engaged society. “Shutting down” is a dream for many of us. In fact, while we sleep, our brains may still be engaged. In our waking hours, we may feel sluggish.

Sleep Hygiene may be a strange title, conjuring up images of brushing teeth and hand washing, but it encompasses everything surrounding quality, restful sleep. Many in our society have fallen victim to the symptoms of sleep deprivation. In fact, people can be misdiagnosed with depression, ADD/ADHD, dementia and other issues because they are sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation can also lead to serious health issues.

You can develop habits for you and your family each evening to optimize sleep. Join us at the Sleep Hygiene Workshop at Sky Ridge Medical Center on September 13 at 6pm. You will learn behaviors and practices from sleep specialists and researchers in order to make sure you and your family function at your absolute best!

When it comes to mental health services, communities traditionally focus on supporting kids as needs arise. This work is crucial for the safety of our students. Equally important, though, is prevention-based programming that can help, early on, prevent the social-emotional challenges our kids may be experiencing from escalating.
