Interested in joining the DCSD Special Education Task Force?


During the 2016-17 school year, DCSD contracted with Corona Insights to develop and conduct a comprehensive survey of Douglas County School District students, parents, staff, and community members.  It was the largest survey of DCSD stakeholders conducted in recent history and provided tremendous feedback on the beliefs, opinions, and values of a large cross section of our constituents.  

Special Education Task Force

As a follow up to these findings, the community and board expressed interest to ask more specific questions and dive deeper into special education services in DCSD.  On January 16, 2018 the Board of Education passed a resolution, introduced by President David Ray, tasking the Superintendent to convene a task force inclusive of members of the general public and staff members. This task force will develop a survey for parents of students eligible for special education services and a survey for staff members who serve students eligible for special education services.  These surveys will be designed to gather actionable feedback about special education services in the Douglas County School District. The Task Force will analyze the results and present strengths, weaknesses and goals along with specific recommendations to the Board of Education.

Director Christina Ciancio-Shor will be facilitating the Task Force, along with Erin Kane, Interim Superintendent, Dr. Steve Cook, Deputy Superintendent, and Nancy Ingalls, Personalized Learning Officer.

In his opening remarks, President Ray made it clear that special education parents and staff are all welcome to participate.

“We are open to anyone who wants to participate - if you have a passion, your voice should be heard,” said Ray. “If you come to the task force, the intention is to do some work.  Certainly it’s not there just to voice your concern, but to be committed to focus on the tasks”.

The Tasks

During these task force meetings participants will engage in structured feedback sessions where community and staff will identify and develop the categories of topics to create specific, actionable survey questions to ask of both of our targeted audiences mentioned above.  The task force will then construct survey questions, administer the survey, analyze the resulting data, construct themes, and lastly, report back to the board at a later date.

The Douglas County School District Board of Education welcomes Dr. Thomas S. Tucker into the role of Superintendent of Douglas County School District. Dr. Tucker officially leads the 68,000 student district as of July 1, 2018.


Nearly 1,500 Colorado students applied for the prestigious Boettcher Foundation Scholarship this year, with 42 being named recipients. Of those, the Douglas County School District (DCSD) is proudly home to four recipients.


When it comes to mental health services, communities traditionally focus on supporting kids as needs arise. This work is crucial for the safety of our students. Equally important, though, is prevention-based programming that can help, early on, prevent the social-emotional challenges our kids may be experiencing from escalating.
