Highlands Ranch High School celebrates ’42 Week’ on the diamond, at school

HIGHLANDS RANCH – When Highlands Ranch High School’s varsity baseball took the field last week against ThunderRidge, it may have been hard for the umpire to keep all of the players straight.  They were all wearing the number 42, in commemoration of a historic moment in baseball and the Civil Rights Movement.

On April 15, 1947 Jackie Robinson became the first baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball (MLB). Today all 36 MLB teams pay tribute to Robinson and the milestone by wearing the number 42 during this special week.

“42 Week” also recognizes the attributes that Jackie Robinson portrayed during his life and MLB career, including courage, perseverance, integrity, teamwork, and inspiration.

Over the course of the week (April 14-18), Highlands Ranch students were encouraged to make a different one of those words a focus on each day. Each day, the students selected a boy and a girl representing each of the attributes and the teens were honored during the April 18 baseball game.

During HRHS’ 42 Week festivities, there was a free screening of the popular film “42” and a hat day that raised money for HRHS students in need.

District News

The Douglas County School District Board of Education welcomes Dr. Thomas S. Tucker into the role of Superintendent of Douglas County School District. Dr. Tucker officially leads the 68,000 student district as of July 1, 2018.

 

Nearly 1,500 Colorado students applied for the prestigious Boettcher Foundation Scholarship this year, with 42 being named recipients. Of those, the Douglas County School District (DCSD) is proudly home to four recipients.

 

When it comes to mental health services, communities traditionally focus on supporting kids as needs arise. This work is crucial for the safety of our students. Equally important, though, is prevention-based programming that can help, early on, prevent the social-emotional challenges our kids may be experiencing from escalating.
