Community support, school climate score high among DCSD teachers in TELL survey
DOUGLAS COUNTY – More than 61 percent of Douglas County School District (DCSD) teachers chose to participate in the 2015 TELL (Teaching, Empowering, Leading and Learning) Colorado Survey, which is administered by the Colorado Department of Education every two years. The survey asks questions on various topics including instructional practices, teaching conditions and community support. The TELL Survey is completely anonymous.
“We value our teachers and we value their feedback,” said DCSD Superintendent Liz Fagen. “We are partnering with our teachers and staff to transform American education. These survey results reinforce that we are doing what is best for all students.”
The majority of the survey focuses on the teaching and learning experience. DCSD teachers rate their experience higher than the state average on approximately 87 percent of those questions. The TELL Survey aligns with the priorities, values and goals set for students and staff in DCSD strategic plans.
Regarding the statement, “Teachers are effective leaders in this school,” 89 percent of DCSD teachers agree or strongly agree. That’s an improvement from 2013 and 7.3 percent higher than 2011. It also beats the state average.
DCSD teachers feel strongly that the community is involved with their school, with 93 percent agreeing or strongly agreeing with the statement, “The community we serve is supportive of this school.” This is 11 percentage points higher than the state average and an improvement over both 2011 and 2013 results.
“Community support is critical to the success of all school districts,” said Fagen. “Everywhere we go, we hear great feedback about how impressed our community leaders and business partners are with our school district. Student success is a shared responsibility and we thank our community for supporting and encouraging our students and staff.”
Survey results show 87 percent of DCSD teachers agree or strongly agree with the statement, “Overall, my school is a good place to work and learn.” Again, this is an improvement from 2011 and 2013, and higher than the state average.
“The TELL Survey shows that DCSD is a great place to teach and learn,” said DCSD Board of Education President Kevin Larsen. “It also shows us the areas where we want to improve.”
Finally on the statement, “Sufficient resources are available for professional development in my school,” 83 percent of DCSD teachers agree or strongly agree, with results again higher than the state average. This is an improvement of 13.2 percent from 2011 and higher than 2013.
