Hundreds gather to get first glimpse inside World Compass Academy

CASTLE ROCK – School doesn’t officially start for students at World Compass Academy until Monday, August 24, but eight days early a crowd gathered to celebrate the school’s grand opening and to get a sneak peak inside.

“We are delighted to have you here to celebrate the grand opening of a long-awaited World Compass Academy,” said Jennifer Williams, who serves as the Chair of World Compass’ Marketing & Events Committee. “Thank you all for coming. Without you, this school would not be.”

The charter school will initially serve preschool through fifth-grade students and grow to a preschool through eighth-grade school over the next four years.

“We are here today to celebrate the dedication of thousands of hours that volunteers and supporters have worked, to bring a truly innovative and one-of-a-kind choice to Castle Rock and Douglas County, Colorado,” said Williams said.

Some families eagerly waited for their chance to get a tour of the brand new school. Once inside children and adults alike peeked around every corner—looking into classrooms and the soon-to-be-completed gymnasium/cafeteria.

“I believe that it is every parent’s dream to find an educational home for their children that will inspire and challenge them to go anywhere and do anything. I think that World Compass Academy will be that home,” said World Compass Academy Principal Jim McDevitt.

“World Compass Academy is committed to engaging and inspiring learners in a safe, challenging and individualized learning environment, which cultivates and fosters character, a life long love of learning and skills to engage in the global community,” added Williams.
World Compass Academy is one of two Douglas County School District (DCSD) charter schools opening this fall. The other, Global Village Academy in Parker, will hold its grand opening on Saturday August 22, 2015.

Castle Rock Mayor Paul Donahue welcomed the school, saying that it will provide classroom capacity as the town grows.

“We are so excited to see World Compass Academy open up,” Donahue said. “We are also excited about the choice that it will allow parents to have and that the parents get an option of looking at where to send their kids to school. I believe that this is a wonderful choice for parents to look at.”

Before participating in the ribbon cutting, Principal McDevitt reflected on this momentousness of the occasion.

“I hope you will enjoy your visit to the school today and that you remember this moment,” McDevitt said. “Students, years from now, maybe you’ll have graduated from high school or college, you’ll be able to look back at this school and say you played an important part in creating a school that is not just the best in the world, but a school that is best for the world.”

When it comes to mental health services, communities traditionally focus on supporting kids as needs arise. This work is crucial for the safety of our students. Equally important, though, is prevention-based programming that can help, early on, prevent the social-emotional challenges our kids may be experiencing from escalating.
