Renaissance Secondary breaks ground
New charter school expected to open in Fall 2017
CASTLE ROCK – A large group of eager parents and students gathered to break ground at the future site of Renaissance Secondary, Douglas County School District’s newest charter school, which is expected to open next fall.
The founding families who gathered to celebrate the milestone for Renaissance Secondary say it will be no ordinary school. At the groundbreaking ceremony on September 28, architect Peter Ewers shared his infectious enthusiasm about how the design will compliment the school’s unique culture and commitment to sustainability.
The facility, which is located a short distance from the Renaissance Expeditionary Learning Magnet School, near Trail Boss Lane and Black Feather Trail, includes an exterior climbing wall that will exemplify and support the school’s Adventure Education program, which is intended to prepare each student for life outside school through challenge, shared experience, and reflection. A central, open courtyard will give students access to the emotional and cognitive benefits of a connection to nature. Similarly, exterior walkways to classrooms will encourage students to go outside…rain, snow, or shine. Designs at the base of the interior and exterior fireplaces reflect the Circle of Courage.
The small school’s strong culture of active participation will be facilitated through flexible spaces that will promote collaboration within and among crews. A circular Welcome Center, symbolizing a drum circle, will display student art as well as other work products resulting from the project-based and art-integrated approach to learning.
The facility builders, JHL Constructors, will leverage their considerable experience delivering charter schools in Colorado to get the building completed for the arrival of students in Fall 2017. Members of the community follow the construction progress at www.rssbuildingcrew.com.
