April 15 Board Briefing
The Douglas County Board of Education convened for business at 5 p.m. on April 15, 2014. The Board conducted business items and engaged public comment from a crowd of students, parents, teachers, and community members. Co-Presidents of the Student Advisory Group, Kianna Nguyen and Sophie Pepin, both ThunderRidge seniors, joined Directors on the dais. Student and Staff Recognition
The Board of Education is recognized the achievement of amazing students, teams, athletes, coaches, and teachers.
Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) Varsity Cheerleading Squad. The RCHS varsity cheerleading squad accomplished the ultimate feat in December, a State Championship. Weeks of hard work and preparation were put into one routine, which ultimately earned the team the right to hoist the first place trophy and take back another state championship for RCHS. And this followed by a dream come true, a 3rd place finish in the country. The squad competed at the Universal Cheerleaders Association National High School Championships at the Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
Four outstanding DCSD swimmers earned outstanding finishes at the Colorado State Swim Meet. The meet was held on February 15 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Adams County.
Annie Ochitwa of ThunderRidge High School won first place in both the 50-Yard and 100-Yard Freestyle races.
Lauren Moden of Legend High School finished in second place in both the 50-Yard and 100-Yard Freestyle races.
Abigail Kochevar of Rock Canyon High School won the State Championship in 100-Yard
Backstroke. She also finished third in the 50-Yard Freestyle race.
Kaitlin Costello of Castle View High School was the state runner-up in 1-Meter Diving.
The Ponderosa High School wrestling team placed third place overall at the meet.
Dylan Gabel, a senior at PHS, overcame a broken back to win two straight state titles. The championship was a fitting end to Gabel’s steller high school wrestling career and record setting season. This year he set Ponderosa’s record for pins in a season. Four of his 35 pins came during the 5A State Tournament on February 22 at the Pepsi Center..
Torry Williams placed second in the 145 lbs. division.
Dylan Formby of Mountain Vista High School and Dane Drimmer of Chaparral High School were state runners-up, in the 145 lbs. and 170 lbs. divisions, respectively.
Kaleb Geiger of Castle View High School took 3rd in State in the 170 lbs. division.
Rock Canyon High School senior Brickelle Bro set a new record. At the Colorado Swimming Senior Meet on Sunday, March 2nd, Paralympian Brickelle broke the Paralympic AMERICAN RECORD for the 1000 Freestyle in the S8 Disability Classification. Her time of 12:48.81 beat the previous record of 13:01.73, by another Paralympian, Jessica Long from 2005.
Angela Ottmann Ponderosa High School Head Poms Coach, received the Swede Johnson Spirit Award from the Sportswomen of Colorado organization. The Swede Johnson Spirit Award is given annually to an athlete or coach who "personifies the Spirit of Youth, and who gives exemplary service to the community". The Sportswomen of Colorado organization recognizes outstanding female athletes and coaches for their contributions to women's sports. Angela was recognized for her achievements at the annual Sportswomen of Colorado banquet on March 9 at the Hyatt Regency Tech Center.
Ranch View Middle School CODE Club is the Best in State of Colorado winner and Best in Region in the 2014 Verizon Innovative App Challenge. Ranch View's app concept earned top points in the State of Colorado for its creativity, innovative design, and application of STEM principles to the development process. CODE Club App Team consist of eighth grade Konstantin Zaremski, Daniel Petito, Neil Trotter, Andrew Homes, Mark Vance, Sean Rhomberg, and Adam Emmelkamp. Read full story
The CODE Club sponsor and Ranch View Middle School teacher Tiffiny Vaughn was also being recognized by the Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics as an Outstanding Secondary Mathematics Teacher at the recent State Mathematics Conference. She was recognized for her innovationand creativity along with her integration of technology and interdisciplinary instruction. Tiffiny is also the Ranch View MATH Counts Coach. Read full story
The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation has announced ThunderRidge High School ProStart teacher Katy Waskey as the 2014 Colorado Educator of Excellence. The award is given to only one teacher from each participating state and is a big honor for Waskey. Waskey has also led her students to a state ProStart title. She, however, says it really celebrates the entire team that has made ThunderRidge a national example in ProStart. The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s ProStart Educator Excellence Awards recognize exceptional educators who utilize the ProStart program in their classrooms. Each participating state nominates its leading educator who has demonstrated a strong commitment to his or her students and to the ProStart program. The awardees will be flown to Chicago to receive their award from the NRAEF in May. Read full story
Student Advisory Group Update
Members of the DCSD Student Advisory Group updated the Board of Education on their 2013-2014 accomplishments and recognized members. Initiated in 2009, the Student Advisory Group has grown to represent nine different DCSD high schools. Students meet monthly and covered topics from school calendars to outdoor education. Students also worked with Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education to provide input on the DCSD Strategic Plan. ThunderRidge seniors Kianna Nguyen and Sophie Pepin chaired the group for the 2013-2014 school year. Nguyen and Pepin informed Directors of their work, outreach and goals. View the presentation

Chief Assessment Officer Dr. Syna Morgan provided an update on state laws and district costs in the area of assessments. Dr. Morgan’s presentation was a response to questions asked at a recent ‘Board Unplugged’ meeting. View the presentation

Board Committee & Liaison Reports
President Larsen announced the May "Board Unplugged" meeting will follow the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting on May 6 in the DCSD Board Room at 620 Wilcox, Castle Rock.
Adoption of Consent Agenda
District Accountability Committee’s (DAC) membership. The DAC membership interview sub-committee recommended three parent nominations to the DAC. Members of the Board of Education voted 6-0 to appoint the nominated parents to the DAC. View the nominations here
Revised student Fees Policy JQ and the Proposed Student Fees to include Transportation Field Trip Charges for FY 2014-2015. Directors considered the new fees policy. The policy was approved on a 5-1 margin. View the policy here
